Which 1775 battle was fought mainly on Breed’s Hill despite being named for another hill?

The story behind the answer

The Battle of Bunker Hill was fought mainly on Breed’s Hill on June 17, 1775.

The battle was part of the Siege of Boston, early in the American Revolutionary War. Colonial forces fortified Breed’s Hill on the Charlestown Peninsula, intending to threaten British positions in Boston and the harbor. British troops attacked the position in repeated assaults and eventually captured it.

The battle retained the name “Bunker Hill” because Bunker Hill was the original objective and stood nearby, even though most fighting occurred on Breed’s Hill. The engagement was a British victory, but British casualties were much heavier than those of the colonial forces.

William Prescott is traditionally associated with the order to conserve ammunition, while colonial leaders including Joseph Warren and Israel Putnam also played important roles. The battle demonstrated that colonial forces could seriously challenge the professional British army.
