Which 1775 battle saw British forces capture Breed’s Hill after two colonial attacks were repulsed?

The story behind the answer

The Battle of Bunker Hill saw British forces capture Breed’s Hill after two colonial attacks were repulsed in 1775.

The battle took place on June 17, 1775, during the Siege of Boston, only about two months after fighting began at Lexington and Concord. Colonial forces fortified Breed’s Hill on the Charlestown Peninsula, although the engagement became known by the name of nearby Bunker Hill.

British troops launched repeated assaults against the fortified colonial position. The first two attacks failed, causing heavy British losses, but the British captured the redoubt during their third assault after the defenders ran low on ammunition. The British technically won the field, while the colonists retreated.

The battle demonstrated that inexperienced colonial forces could stand against regular British troops. British casualties were far higher than American casualties, including many officers. The death of colonial leader Joseph Warren became one of the battle’s best-known episodes. The event is commonly called Bunker Hill even though most fighting occurred on Breed’s Hill.
