Answer
Battle of Bunker Hill
Answer
Battle of Bunker Hill
The Battle of Bunker Hill saw British forces capture Breed’s Hill after three assaults during the Siege of Boston.
Fought on June 17, 1775, the battle began when colonial troops fortified Breed’s Hill on the Charlestown Peninsula, across the water from Boston. The position was intended to threaten British forces and shipping in the harbor. Although the battle is named for nearby Bunker Hill, most of the fighting occurred on Breed’s Hill.
British troops eventually took the colonial redoubt, but they suffered much heavier casualties. The battle demonstrated that American forces could stand against experienced British regulars, even though the colonial army ultimately retreated from the peninsula.
The battle occurred before the Declaration of Independence and before the Continental Army formally existed. It formed part of the early Siege of Boston, which began after the clashes at Lexington and Concord in April 1775. The British victory did not end the siege or eliminate colonial resistance.
