Which 1775 battle, named for a Massachusetts hill, was fought during the Siege of Boston?
Answer
Battle of Bunker Hill
Answer
Battle of Bunker Hill
The Battle of Bunker Hill was fought on June 17, 1775, during the Siege of Boston.
Although the battle bears Bunker Hill’s name, most of the fighting occurred on nearby Breed’s Hill in Charlestown, Massachusetts. Colonial forces built fortifications there while British troops attempted to seize the heights overlooking Boston Harbor.
The British captured the colonial position after three assaults, making the battle a British victory. However, British casualties were heavy, and the engagement demonstrated that the colonial forces could stand against regular British troops. The battle became one of the earliest major clashes of the American Revolutionary War.
The battle’s name can be confusing because Bunker Hill was the original objective and the nearby location from which the engagement took its traditional name. The Siege of Boston continued until March 1776, when British forces evacuated the city.
