Which 1775 battle is widely regarded as the first major battle of the American Revolutionary War?
Answer
Battle of Bunker Hill
Answer
Battle of Bunker Hill
The Battle of Bunker Hill is widely regarded as the first major battle of the American Revolutionary War. It was fought on June 17, 1775, during the Siege of Boston.
Although the battle is named for Bunker Hill, most of the fighting occurred on nearby Breed’s Hill, where colonial forces built defensive fortifications. British troops captured the position after repeated assaults, making the battle a British tactical victory. However, British casualties were heavy, and the colonial resistance demonstrated that the American forces could challenge regular troops.
The battle happened after the clashes at Lexington and Concord in April 1775, which began the armed conflict. Its name can therefore be confusing: Bunker Hill was the historical label, while Breed’s Hill was the principal battlefield. The engagement helped persuade both sides that the conflict would be a sustained war.
