Which 1620 agreement is honored by one of the 2026 semiquincentennial quarter designs?

The story behind the answer

The Mayflower Compact is the 1620 agreement honored by one of the 2026 semiquincentennial quarter designs.

The Mayflower Compact was signed by English settlers aboard the Mayflower in November 1620 before they established Plymouth Colony. Its signers agreed to form a civil political body and to follow laws made for the general good of the settlement.

The 2026 quarter design features two Pilgrims on the obverse and the Mayflower on the reverse. It is one of five special quarter themes connected with the semiquincentennial, alongside the Revolutionary War, the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and the Gettysburg Address.

The compact is sometimes described as an early step toward self-government, but it was not a constitution for the entire future United States. It governed the Plymouth settlers and predates the Declaration of Independence by 156 years.
