Which 1494 treaty divided newly explored Atlantic lands between Spain and Portugal?

The story behind the answer

The Treaty of Tordesillas divided newly explored Atlantic lands between Spain and Portugal.

Signed in 1494, the treaty moved an earlier papal boundary westward to a line roughly 370 leagues west of the Cape Verde islands. Lands east of the line were assigned to Portugal, while lands west were assigned to Castile, the principal Spanish kingdom involved in overseas exploration.

The agreement followed Christopher Columbus’s 1492 voyage and disputes over competing claims. It later helped Portugal establish a legal basis for claiming Brazil after Pedro Álvares Cabral reached the coast in 1500.

The treaty did not represent the wishes of Indigenous peoples and could not effectively control territories unknown to its European signatories. A related 1529 Treaty of Zaragoza settled claims in the Pacific.
