Where was the United States Semiquincentennial Commission sworn in during 2018?
Answer
Independence Hall
Answer
Independence Hall
The United States Semiquincentennial Commission was sworn in at Independence Hall during 2018.
Independence Hall in Philadelphia was chosen because of its direct connection to the founding era. The Second Continental Congress met there when it adopted the Declaration of Independence in 1776, and the Constitutional Convention met there when it drafted the U.S. Constitution in 1787.
The building was originally the Pennsylvania State House. Its Assembly Room is associated with both major founding documents, making Philadelphia a particularly fitting place to begin formal preparations for the 250th anniversary.
Independence Hall is sometimes confused with nearby landmarks such as the Liberty Bell Center or the National Constitution Center. Those institutions are part of Philadelphia’s historic district, but the commission’s 2018 swearing-in took place at Independence Hall itself.
