Where was the United States Constitution signed, a site central to America250 history?

The story behind the answer

The United States Constitution was signed at Independence Hall in Philadelphia, a site central to America250 history.

The signing took place on September 17, 1787, at the final session of the Constitutional Convention. Independence Hall was then known as the Pennsylvania State House. The building had already hosted major Revolutionary-era events, including the Second Continental Congress and the adoption of the Declaration of Independence.

The convention originally met to consider changes to the Articles of Confederation, but the delegates ultimately drafted an entirely new framework of government. Thirty-nine delegates from twelve states signed the final document.

The building is frequently confused with Carpenters' Hall, where the First Continental Congress met in 1774. Federal Hall in New York City was later the first seat of the new federal government under the Constitution, while Congress Hall served as a later federal meeting place in Philadelphia.
