Where was the Sagan Planet Walk's Alpha Centauri obelisk installed in 2012?

The Sagan Planet Walk’s Alpha Centauri obelisk was installed at the ʻImiloa Astronomy Center in 2012. It is located on the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo campus, not at one of the famous mainland observatories listed as distractors.

The Planet Walk began in Ithaca, New York, in 1997 as a one-to-five-billion-scale model of the Solar System, created in memory of Cornell astronomer Carl Sagan. Its original markers run from the Sun to Pluto along a downtown route. The 2012 addition extended the model roughly 4,740 miles to Hawaiʻi, representing Alpha Centauri, the nearest stellar system to the Sun.

The installation was more than a simple astronomical marker. Its station includes a Hawaiian volcanic-stone figure representing Alpha Centauri and educational material connecting the star system with Polynesian navigation. The exhibit’s scale also explains why the station had to be placed thousands of miles away: at the model’s scale, Alpha Centauri is far beyond the local Ithaca path. The later discovery and study of planets around stars in the Alpha Centauri system add another layer of interest, but the station represents the star system itself.
