The official Japanese surrender ceremony in China was held in Nanjing on 9 September 1945. It formally ended Japanese military operations in China after the broader surrender ceremony in Tokyo Bay.
The event took place at 9 a.m. in the auditorium of the Central Army Military Academy. General Yasuji Okamura, commander of Japanese forces in China, surrendered to General He Yingqin, representing the Republic of China.
The ceremony had originally been scheduled for 5 September but was delayed for four days. Japanese forces in China were ordered to cease armed resistance and surrender their weapons and equipment under the Allied surrender arrangements.
Nanjing had been the capital of the Nationalist government before the Japanese occupation and had great symbolic importance. The 9 September date is often remembered in China as “9/9,” a concise marker of Japan’s surrender in the Chinese theater.
