Where was the Liberty Bell housed from January 1, 1976, during the United States Bicentennial?
Answer
Liberty Bell Pavilion
Answer
Liberty Bell Pavilion
The Liberty Bell was housed in the Liberty Bell Pavilion from January 1, 1976, during the United States Bicentennial.
The pavilion was built in Philadelphia to give the bell a separate, purpose-designed visitor space. Officials feared that the crowds expected for the Bicentennial could overwhelm Independence Hall or damage the historic building, so they planned to move the bell nearby.
The pavilion opened at 12:01 a.m. on January 1, 1976, as part of Philadelphia’s New Year’s celebration. It stood about 600 feet north of Independence Hall and housed the bell until October 9, 2003.
The pavilion was later replaced by the Liberty Bell Center, which opened in 2003. Independence Hall is the building historically associated with the bell, but it was not its visitor home during the 1976 Bicentennial year.
