Where was the first transcontinental railroad in the United States officially completed in 1869?

The story behind the answer

The first transcontinental railroad in the United States was officially completed at Promontory Summit, Utah, on May 10, 1869.

The Union Pacific Railroad built westward from the Omaha and Council Bluffs area, while the Central Pacific Railroad built eastward from Sacramento. Their rail lines met at Promontory Summit in Utah Territory, where officials held the Golden Spike ceremony.

The famous event symbolized the joining of the eastern rail network with the Pacific coast. Leland Stanford of Central Pacific drove the final ceremonial spike, although the railroad’s actual construction involved thousands of workers, including many Chinese laborers on the Central Pacific and Irish immigrants on the Union Pacific.

Promontory Summit is sometimes confused with Promontory Point, a different location farther south. The original route was later bypassed by the Lucin Cutoff, and the historic summit is now preserved as Golden Spike National Historical Park.
