Where was the first Cincinnati Open held in 1899?
Answer
Avondale Athletic Club
Answer
Avondale Athletic Club
The first Cincinnati Open was held at the Avondale Athletic Club in 1899.
The tournament began on 18 September 1899 as the Cincinnati Open. The Avondale Athletic Club stood on property that is now associated with Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio.
The event later moved between several locations as management, court surfaces, and tournament structures changed. It was held primarily at the Cincinnati Tennis Club from 1903 until 1972, then spent periods at other sites before arriving in Mason.
The modern tournament is played at the Lindner Family Tennis Center, but that venue did not host the inaugural edition. The early event was played on clay, while the tournament switched to hard courts in 1979.
