The Declaration of Independence was first read publicly at State House Yard in Philadelphia, a location connected with the history remembered by America250.
Colonel John Nixon gave the first public reading on July 8, 1776. State House Yard was the grounds surrounding the Pennsylvania State House, the building now known as Independence Hall. Crowds gathered there to hear the document announcing the colonies’ separation from Great Britain.
The Declaration had already been adopted by the Continental Congress on July 4. Public readings then carried its message beyond the delegates and into communities where the document could be heard by people who had not seen the printed text.
State House Yard is sometimes confused with Independence Hall because the reading took place outside the statehouse building. Carpenters’ Hall, another Philadelphia landmark, hosted the First Continental Congress in 1774, but it was not the site of the Declaration’s first public reading.
