The 2016 American League Wild Card Game was played in Toronto, at Rogers Centre.

The Toronto Blue Jays hosted the Baltimore Orioles on October 4, 2016. Toronto won 5–2 in 11 innings, advancing to face the Texas Rangers in the American League Division Series. Edwin Encarnación ended the game with a three-run walk-off home run in the bottom of the 11th inning.

Rogers Centre was the Blue Jays’ home ballpark and had a retractable roof. For this postseason game, the roof was open, creating an especially memorable setting for the sellout crowd of 49,934.

The result was notable beyond the dramatic finish. Both teams had ended the regular season with 89–73 records, making the contest a tense meeting between evenly matched wild-card clubs. Baltimore’s Zach Britton, one of baseball’s top relievers, did not pitch in the game.
