The 1945 ceremony that ended Japan’s war against China was held in Nanjing.
Japan’s surrender ceremony in China took place on September 9, 1945, at the Central Army Military Academy in Nanjing. It occurred one week after Japan’s broader formal surrender aboard USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay. The ceremony addressed the surrender of Japanese forces in China and formally ended the Second Sino-Japanese War.
The event was scheduled for September 5 but was delayed four days. General He Yingqin accepted the surrender on behalf of the Chinese Nationalist government, while General Yasuji Okamura represented Japan. Nanjing had been the capital of the Republic of China during much of the war.
This ceremony is sometimes confused with the Tokyo Bay ceremony because both occurred in September 1945. Tokyo Bay ended Japan’s war with the principal Allied powers, while Nanjing documented the surrender of Japanese forces in China. Separate local surrender ceremonies followed elsewhere across Asia and the Pacific.
