Adu was born Fredua Koranteng Adu on June 2, 1989, in Tema, Ghana, a port city near Accra. His family moved to the United States in 1997 after winning a visa through the U.S. diversity immigrant-visa lottery, and he grew up in the Washington, D.C., area.

As a child in Ghana, Adu played pickup soccer against much older players. After moving to Maryland, his ability developed through organized youth soccer, and he quickly attracted national attention. He became a U.S. citizen in 2003 and represented the United States internationally.
