Where was Pinterest originally based before moving in 2012?

The story behind the answer

Pinterest was originally based in Palo Alto before moving in 2012.

The early company operated from Palo Alto during Pinterest’s formative period, when co-founders Ben Silbermann, Paul Sciarra, and Evan Sharp were developing the service and building its initial user base. The location placed the startup in Silicon Valley, close to investors, engineers, and other technology companies.

Pinterest officially announced its move from Palo Alto to San Francisco in July 2012. The company initially signed short-term office space at 572 Seventh Street in the South of Market area, or SoMa, as its rapidly expanding team needed more room. Company leaders cited San Francisco’s technology talent, atmosphere, and comparatively attractive office space as reasons for the relocation.

The answer is sometimes confused with nearby Silicon Valley cities associated with other major technology companies. Menlo Park became strongly associated with Facebook, Mountain View with Google, and San Jose with many large technology firms. Pinterest’s own early base, however, was Palo Alto, while its later headquarters became associated with San Francisco.
