Where was NASA’s 1976 Bicentennial science and technology exhibit, Third Century America, installed?

The story behind the answer

NASA installed its 1976 Bicentennial science and technology exhibit, Third Century America, in a series of geodesic domes in the Vehicle Assembly Building parking lot.

The Vehicle Assembly Building, or VAB, is part of NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. It was built to assemble and prepare large launch vehicles, including the Saturn V used for the Apollo missions and the Space Shuttle vehicles that followed.

For the Bicentennial, NASA used the parking area outside the enormous building for a public exhibit made up of geodesic domes. The display connected the nation’s revolutionary past with science, engineering, and the technological possibilities of its third century.

The location can be confused with Washington’s National Mall, where many other Bicentennial exhibitions were held, or with NASA facilities in Houston. Third Century America was staged at Kennedy Space Center in Florida, specifically in the VAB parking lot.
