Where was J.K. Rowling born on 31 July 1965?

The story behind the answer

J.K. Rowling was born in Yate, England, on 31 July 1965.

Yate is a town in South Gloucestershire, near Bristol. Rowling’s parents, Peter Rowling and Anne Rowling, were living in the area when she was born. Although she was born in England, Rowling is often strongly associated with Wales because she spent part of her childhood in Chepstow and attended Wyedean School.

Rowling later studied French and Classics at the University of Exeter. Her early life in England and Wales supplied some of the landscapes and experiences that readers associate with her fiction. A common mix-up is the idea that she was born in Bristol itself; Yate is nearby but is a separate town.

Rowling’s birthplace is distinct from Edinburgh, where she wrote important parts of the Harry Potter series. She moved to Scotland in the early 1990s and became closely linked with Edinburgh’s literary identity.
