Japan's Instrument of Surrender was signed in Tokyo Bay during the 1945 V-J Day ceremony.
The document was signed aboard the USS Missouri on September 2, 1945. The ship was anchored in Tokyo Bay, placing the ceremony close to Japan's capital while keeping the event aboard a naval vessel under Allied control.
Japanese representatives signed first, followed by representatives of the Allied powers. The ceremony included the United States, China, the United Kingdom, the Soviet Union, Australia, Canada, France, the Netherlands, and New Zealand.
Tokyo Bay is not the same location as the earlier announcement of surrender. Emperor Hirohito's radio broadcast originated from the Imperial Palace in Tokyo on August 15. The bay ceremony was the later, formal act that ended hostilities on paper.
