Where was Gianni Versace born?

The story behind the answer

Gianni Versace was born in Reggio Calabria, Italy.

Giovanni Maria Versace was born there on 2 December 1946 and spent his early years in the southern Italian city. Reggio Calabria lies at the toe of Italy’s peninsula, opposite Sicily across the Strait of Messina. The region’s Mediterranean setting and ancient Greek heritage influenced his imagination and later design vocabulary.

His mother, Francesca, was a dressmaker, and Gianni began learning about clothing in her workshop. The family business employed several seamstresses, giving him practical experience long before he became an internationally known designer.

At age 26, Versace moved to Milan to pursue fashion design. He worked for labels including Callaghan, Genny, and Complice before launching his own fashion house in 1978. Milan became the center of his professional life, but Reggio Calabria remained the place associated with his birth and formative years.

Naples, Rome, and Milan are all major Italian cities connected with fashion or Versace’s career, but none is his birthplace.
