Where was Anne Frank born?

Anne Frank was born in Frankfurt, Germany, on 12 June 1929. Her full name was Annelies Marie Frank, and she was born at the Maingau Red Cross Clinic to Otto Frank and Edith Frank-Holländer.

The Frank family lived in Frankfurt during Anne’s early childhood, first on Marbachweg and later in the city’s Dornbusch area. After Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party came to power, Otto Frank sought safety for the family outside Germany. Anne moved with her mother and sister Margot to the Netherlands in 1934, joining Otto in Amsterdam.

Anne became famous after her death for the diary she kept while hiding from Nazi persecution in a concealed annex in Amsterdam between 1942 and 1944. The diary describes family life, fear, conflict, hopes, and her development as a writer during the Holocaust.

Some readers incorrectly answer Amsterdam because Anne spent most of her remembered childhood there and wrote her diary there. Frankfurt is nevertheless the correct birthplace. She later lost her German citizenship under Nazi racial laws and became stateless, but her birthplace remained Frankfurt.
