Where was A Study in Scarlet first published in 1887?
Answer
Beeton’s Christmas Annual
Answer
Beeton’s Christmas Annual
A Study in Scarlet was first published in Beeton’s Christmas Annual in 1887.
The novel introduced Sherlock Holmes and Dr John Watson, establishing their partnership after Watson returns from military service in Afghanistan. Watson meets Holmes through a mutual acquaintance, and the two begin sharing rooms at 221B Baker Street.
Beeton’s Christmas Annual was a British periodical that published fiction and other material in a special Christmas issue. A Study in Scarlet appeared there before being reprinted in book form. The first edition helped launch Holmes, but the character’s worldwide fame grew especially after the later short stories.
Readers sometimes associate the earliest Holmes fiction with The Strand Magazine. That association is understandable because The Strand became the major home of the later short stories, beginning with “A Scandal in Bohemia” in 1891.
