Where is the lowest point on land?

The lowest point on land is the shore of the Dead Sea, roughly 430 metres below mean sea level.

The Dead Sea is a hypersaline lake in the Jordan Rift Valley, bordered by Jordan, Israel and the West Bank. The Jordan River feeds it, but no river flows out; intense evaporation leaves behind unusually high concentrations of dissolved salts. That combination creates the lake’s famous buoyancy and helps explain why very few organisms survive in its water.

The answer refers to the exposed land at the shoreline, not the deepest point beneath the lake. The Dead Sea’s surface and shore continue to fall as inflow decreases and water is diverted for agriculture, industry and drinking supply. Its exact elevation therefore changes over time, and different sources may give slightly different figures.

Turpan Depression, Lake Assal and Death Valley are genuine geographic extremes, but they are lower points only within particular countries, continents or regions. The Dead Sea remains the standard worldwide answer for the lowest land elevation.
