Where is the headquarters of the United Nations located?

The story behind the answer

The headquarters of the United Nations is in New York City.

The UN complex occupies an international territory along the East River in Manhattan. Construction began in 1949, and the headquarters officially opened in 1951. The site contains the General Assembly Building, the Secretariat Building, the Conference Building, and the Dag Hammarskjöld Library.

The location was selected after an offer from John D. Rockefeller Jr., who donated land for the project. An international team led by architect Wallace Harrison developed the design, with contributions from architects representing several countries. The complex’s location does not make New York City part of the United Nations; the grounds have a special international legal status.

The UN also maintains major offices in Geneva, Vienna, and Nairobi. Geneva hosts important human-rights and humanitarian work, while Vienna is a center for diplomacy and international law. New York remains the organization’s principal headquarters and the usual venue for the General Assembly’s annual high-level session.
