The headquarters of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development are in London.
The EBRD was established in 1991, during the political and economic transformation that followed the end of the Cold War. Its original purpose was to help former communist countries in Central and Eastern Europe move toward market economies and democratic institutions. Its operating regions later expanded beyond Europe.
The bank invests in private companies, public infrastructure, financial institutions, and sustainable-energy projects. Unlike many traditional development lenders, it has a strong emphasis on private-sector development and transition toward open, market-based economies.
London was selected as the EBRD's headquarters, and the institution is based near the City of London. The EBRD should not be confused with the European Investment Bank, whose headquarters are in Luxembourg, or the European Central Bank, headquartered in Frankfurt.
