Where is Rembrandt buried?

Rembrandt is buried in Amsterdam’s Westerkerk.

The painter died in Amsterdam on 4 October 1669 and was buried four days later in the Westerkerk, a major Protestant church near the Prinsengracht. His burial took place in an unmarked rented grave, reflecting both the ordinary burial customs of the period and the financial difficulties he faced late in life.

The exact location of the grave is no longer identifiable. A memorial stone for Rembrandt was installed in the church in the twentieth century, commemorating him without marking a surviving physical tomb. Visitors sometimes confuse Westerkerk with the nearby Oude Kerk, which is associated with several other important Amsterdam burials.

Rembrandt’s connection with Amsterdam lasted most of his professional life. Although he was born in Leiden, he built his career, workshop, and household in Amsterdam, where he produced portraits, history paintings, drawings, and prints.
