Where is Napoleon's tomb located?
Answer
Les Invalides
Answer
Les Invalides
Napoleon's tomb is located at Les Invalides in Paris, beneath the golden Dôme des Invalides. The monumental tomb holds his remains in a red quartzite sarcophagus placed on a green granite base.
Napoleon died on Saint Helena in 1821 and was initially buried there. In 1840, King Louis-Philippe authorized the return of his remains to France in an event known as the retour des cendres, or “return of the ashes.” His body was eventually placed in the completed tomb at Les Invalides in 1861.
The tomb was designed by architect Louis Visconti and surrounded by sculptures representing Napoleon’s achievements and military victories. Les Invalides also contains the graves of other prominent French military figures, but Napoleon’s Dôme tomb is its best-known monument.
