Where is Hans Christian Andersen buried?

The story behind the answer

Hans Christian Andersen is buried at Assistens Cemetery in Copenhagen.

Assistens Cemetery, known in Danish as Assistens Kirkegård, began as a burial ground outside Copenhagen’s old city in the eighteenth century. It later became both an active cemetery and a historic cultural site, with graves of prominent Danish writers, artists, scientists, and public figures.

Andersen was buried there after his death in 1875. His grave is among the cemetery’s best-known literary memorials, alongside the graves of figures such as philosopher Søren Kierkegaard. The cemetery’s tree-lined paths make it different from a conventional enclosed memorial museum, and it remains a public urban space.

This location is sometimes confused with Odense because Andersen was born there and is strongly associated with the city. However, his final burial place is in Copenhagen, where he spent much of his adult life and died.
