Where in Japan did the formal signing of the Japanese Instrument of Surrender take place?

The story behind the answer

The formal signing of the Japanese Instrument of Surrender took place in Tokyo Bay.

The ceremony was held on the deck of USS Missouri on September 2, 1945. The battleship was anchored near the location where Commodore Matthew Perry's squadron had anchored in 1853, an event associated with the opening of Japan to greater foreign contact. That historical connection was deliberately recognized during the surrender ceremony.

Japanese Foreign Minister Mamoru Shigemitsu and General Yoshijirō Umezu signed on behalf of Japan. General Douglas MacArthur signed first for the Allied powers, followed by representatives of the United States, China, the United Kingdom, the Soviet Union, Australia, Canada, France, the Netherlands, and New Zealand.

Tokyo Bay should not be confused with Hiroshima or Nagasaki, the cities attacked with atomic bombs in August 1945. Those bombings influenced the final days of the war, but neither city hosted the surrender signing.
