Where does the London Marathon traditionally finish?

The story behind the answer

The London Marathon traditionally finishes on The Mall in central London.

The finishing straight runs along The Mall toward Buckingham Palace, giving the race one of the most recognizable finales in distance running. The ceremonial avenue connects Trafalgar Square with Buckingham Palace and is regularly used for major national events.

The modern London Marathon was first held in 1981 after Chris Brasher and John Disley established the event. Its route has changed in details, but the finish at The Mall has remained a defining feature. Runners pass landmarks including the Tower of London, Canary Wharf and the Houses of Parliament before reaching the final section.

A common mix-up is confusing the finish with the start. The race traditionally starts in Greenwich Park, Blackheath or nearby starting areas, while The Mall is the destination. The finish area is also close to St James's Park and Buckingham Palace.
