Where did the Wright brothers make their first successful powered flight in 1903?

The story behind the answer

The Wright brothers made their first successful powered flight near Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, in 1903.

Orville Wright piloted the first flight on December 17, 1903, at Kill Devil Hills, a site near the town of Kitty Hawk on the Outer Banks. The flight lasted 12 seconds and covered 120 feet. Wilbur Wright made the longest flight that day, traveling 852 feet in 59 seconds.

The brothers chose the North Carolina site because its steady winds, sandy ground, and isolation suited their experiments. Their work grew from bicycle-making experience and years of studying lift, drag, propulsion, and aircraft control. They tested gliders at Kitty Hawk before adding a gasoline engine and propellers.

The first flight was brief, but it demonstrated controlled, sustained, powered flight with a heavier-than-air machine. The Wrights later carried out additional tests in Ohio and France. Their achievement is sometimes associated with Dayton, their hometown, but the first powered flights occurred in North Carolina.
