Where did the United States Constitutional Convention meet in 1787?
Answer
Independence Hall
Answer
Independence Hall
The United States Constitutional Convention met at Independence Hall in Philadelphia in 1787.
At the time, the building was known as the Pennsylvania State House. It had already hosted the Second Continental Congress and the adoption of the Declaration of Independence in 1776. The name Independence Hall became common later.
The convention ran from May 25 to September 17, 1787. Delegates originally gathered to improve the Articles of Confederation, the first national government framework, but they ultimately drafted an entirely new Constitution.
The meeting place is sometimes confused with Federal Hall in New York City, where the United States Congress met under the Articles of Confederation and where George Washington took his presidential oath in 1789. Independence Hall remains a major symbol of the country’s founding era.
