Where did the strongest instrumentally recorded earthquake occur in 1960?

The story behind the answer

The strongest instrumentally recorded earthquake occurred near Valdivia, Chile, in 1960.

The 1960 Valdivia earthquake struck southern Chile on 22 May 1960 and had a moment magnitude of 9.5. Its rupture occurred along the boundary where the Nazca Plate is forced beneath the South American Plate. The shaking damaged or destroyed communities across a vast region, and the resulting Pacific-wide tsunami reached places including Hawaii, Japan and the Philippines.

The earthquake is also called the Great Chilean earthquake. Valdivia is the usual name because the city suffered severe damage, although the rupture extended for hundreds of kilometres along the Chilean coast. Later earthquakes have matched or approached magnitude 9, but none has exceeded this event in the instrumental record.
