Where did the first transcontinental railroad officially meet in 1869?

The story behind the answer

The first transcontinental railroad officially met at Promontory Summit in Utah Territory.

On May 10, 1869, the Central Pacific and Union Pacific railroads joined their tracks at Promontory Summit. Central Pacific crews built eastward from Sacramento, while Union Pacific crews built westward from the Missouri River region. Leland Stanford ceremonially drove the final golden spike.

The event connected Omaha and Sacramento by rail, although passengers still needed a ferry connection between the railroad and San Francisco Bay. The line dramatically reduced cross-country travel, which had previously taken months by wagon, stagecoach, or ship.

Promontory Summit is sometimes confused with Promontory Point, a different location farther south. The original route through Promontory Summit was later bypassed, and its rails were removed in 1942 for wartime recycling.
