Where did the First Continental Congress meet in Philadelphia from September to October 1774?
Answer
Carpenters' Hall
Answer
Carpenters' Hall
The First Continental Congress met at Carpenters’ Hall in Philadelphia from September 5 to October 26, 1774.
Delegates from 12 of the 13 American colonies gathered there in response to the Intolerable Acts, punitive laws passed by the British Parliament after the Boston Tea Party. Georgia did not send delegates to this first meeting.
The delegates sought a united response while many still hoped to repair relations with Britain. They adopted the Continental Association, which organized a boycott of British goods, and issued a declaration of colonial rights and grievances.
Carpenters’ Hall was the meeting place of a craftsmen’s guild and provided a neutral venue for the delegates. The Second Continental Congress met the following year at the Pennsylvania State House, now known as Independence Hall, where it directed the Revolutionary War and later adopted the Declaration of Independence.
