Where did the Central Pacific and Union Pacific railroads meet in 1869?

The story behind the answer

The Central Pacific and Union Pacific railroads met at Promontory Summit in Utah in 1869.

The meeting completed the first transcontinental railroad in the United States. Central Pacific crews built eastward from Sacramento, while Union Pacific crews built westward from Omaha. The two lines joined on May 10, 1869, at Promontory Summit in the Utah Territory.

A ceremonial golden spike was driven to mark the completion. Leland Stanford, president of the Central Pacific, was among the participants, although the final spike ceremony involved several symbolic spikes and posed difficulties for the celebrants. The railroad connected the existing eastern rail network with the Pacific coast.

The completed route transformed travel, commerce, migration, and mail delivery. It shortened journeys across the continent from months to roughly a week. The construction depended heavily on Chinese immigrant labor for the Central Pacific and Irish immigrant labor for the Union Pacific, while also affecting Indigenous nations whose lands and communities were crossed by the railroad.
