Where did the Boston Red Sox play before playing in Fenway Park?

The story behind the answer

Before playing at Fenway Park, the Boston Red Sox played at the Huntington Avenue Grounds. The ballpark stood in Boston’s Fenway-adjacent area and served as the club’s home from 1901 through 1911.

The team began in 1901 as Boston’s American League franchise and was initially known as the Boston Americans. The Huntington Avenue Grounds was built for that new club, which joined the American League during its inaugural season. The team adopted the Red Sox name in 1908, but remained at the same grounds until the end of 1911.

The park hosted major early baseball history, including games from the first modern World Series in 1903. Boston defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates in that series, with the championship helping establish the importance of the new American League.

Fenway Park opened in 1912, replacing the Huntington Avenue Grounds as Boston’s home. The old site is now associated with Northeastern University, and a marker commemorates its baseball history. Fenway is therefore not the Red Sox’s original home, although it is by far their most famous one.
