Where did the band Stone Sour originate?

The story behind the answer

Stone Sour originated in Des Moines, Iowa, forming there in 1992.

The band was founded by vocalist Corey Taylor, guitarist Josh Rand, and drummer Joel Ekman, although its early lineup changed over time. Stone Sour emerged from the same fertile central-Iowa music scene that later produced Slipknot, with Taylor eventually becoming prominent in both groups.

Stone Sour initially built a following through local performances before releasing its self-titled debut album in 2002. The record brought the band wider attention with songs such as “Bother,” which also appeared on the Spider-Man soundtrack. Their music blended hard rock, alternative metal, and more melodic songwriting than Taylor’s work with Slipknot.

Des Moines is therefore more than a later association: it is the band’s founding city. A common mix-up is to identify Stone Sour simply as a Slipknot side project. Although the groups share important members, Stone Sour predates Slipknot’s international breakthrough and has its own separate history.
