Where did Japan’s formal surrender in Southeast Asia take place on September 12, 1945?

The story behind the answer

Japan’s formal surrender in Southeast Asia took place at the Singapore Municipal Building on September 12, 1945.

Lord Louis Mountbatten, Supreme Allied Commander of Southeast Asia Command, received the surrender from General Seishiro Itagaki. Itagaki signed on behalf of Field Marshal Hisaichi Terauchi, commander of Japan’s Southern Army Group.

The building later became known as City Hall and remains one of Singapore’s best-known historic landmarks. This regional ceremony followed the main surrender aboard USS Missouri and transferred control of Japanese forces in Southeast Asia to the Allies.
