Japanese forces in China held a separate surrender ceremony in Nanjing on September 9, 1945.
The ceremony took place at the auditorium of the Central Army Military Academy in Nanjing. General Yasuji Okamura, commander of the Japanese China Expeditionary Army, signed the surrender document for Japan.
General He Yingqin accepted the surrender for the Republic of China and the Allied side. British Major-General Eric Hayes also attended as an Allied representative. The ceremony followed the formal end of the wider war aboard USS Missouri one week earlier.
Nanjing had been the capital of the Nationalist Chinese government during the war and had been occupied by Japan since 1937. The separate ceremony addressed Japanese forces operating in China, illustrating that Japan’s surrender required regional handovers as well as the main Allied signing in Tokyo Bay.
