Where did Japanese forces formally surrender in Southeast Asia on 12 September 1945?

The story behind the answer

Japanese forces formally surrendered in Southeast Asia at Singapore Municipal Building on 12 September 1945.

The ceremony followed Japan’s broader surrender and covered Japanese forces in Southeast Asia. Lord Louis Mountbatten, Supreme Allied Commander of South East Asia Command, received the surrender from General Seishirō Itagaki, who acted for Field Marshal Hisaichi Terauchi.

The building, now known as City Hall, stood beside the Padang, where celebrations and a victory parade followed the signing. British military administration then governed Singapore until March 1946.

This ceremony is sometimes confused with the main surrender ceremony aboard USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay on 2 September. Tokyo Bay ended the war at the level of the Japanese government and Allied powers; Singapore was a regional surrender ceremony for Japanese forces in Southeast Asia.
