Where did Andy Warhol first exhibit his Campbell’s Soup Cans in 1962?

The story behind the answer

Andy Warhol first exhibited Campbell’s Soup Cans at Ferus Gallery in Los Angeles in 1962.

The exhibition presented 32 canvases, each representing a different Campbell’s soup variety. It opened on July 9, 1962, and is widely regarded as a landmark moment in the development of American Pop Art.

Ferus Gallery was an influential Los Angeles venue founded by curator Walter Hopps and artist Irving Blum. Blum organized Warhol’s soup-can presentation as a single installation, with the paintings displayed in a row like products on a supermarket shelf. The arrangement emphasized repetition and commercial design.

The exhibition is sometimes confused with Warhol’s later New York gallery shows, especially his 1962 presentation at the Stable Gallery. The Ferus exhibition came first and introduced the soup-can paintings as a unified group.
