Where are the members of Boyz II Men from?
Answer
Philadelphia, PA
Answer
Philadelphia, PA
The members of Boyz II Men are from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
The group’s roots are at Philadelphia’s High School for the Creative and Performing Arts, commonly called CAPA. Nathan Morris and Marc Nelson began forming a vocal group there in 1985, initially calling it Unique Attraction. Wanyá Morris, Shawn Stockman, and Michael McCary later joined, creating the lineup that led to Boyz II Men’s breakthrough.
The group’s name came from “Boys to Men,” a song by New Edition, whose music strongly influenced the young singers. In 1989, they met Michael Bivins backstage after a Bell Biv DeVoe performance and impressed him with an a cappella performance. Bivins helped them secure a Motown Records deal.
Their 1991 debut album, Cooleyhighharmony, produced hits including “Motownphilly” and “It’s So Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday.” Philadelphia is sometimes overlooked because Motown Records was based in Detroit, but the label does not indicate the group’s hometown. Boyz II Men’s identity, vocal training, and origin story are firmly tied to Philadelphia.
