When was the first episode of the Pokémon animated series first broadcast in Japan?

The story behind the answer

The first episode of the Pokémon animated series was first broadcast in Japan on April 1, 1997.

Titled “Pokémon, I Choose You!”, the episode aired on TV Tokyo. It introduces Ash Ketchum as a young Trainer who receives Pikachu from Professor Oak after arriving late and missing the three traditional starter Pokémon. Ash and Pikachu then begin their journey together.

The episode also establishes an important early relationship in the series. Pikachu initially refuses to stay inside its Poké Ball, but the pair gradually develop trust while fleeing a flock of angry Spearow. The story ends with the mysterious sighting of Ho-Oh, whose game data was not included in the original Pokédex.

The Japanese broadcast date is distinct from later international premieres. The first season aired in the United States beginning in September 1998, more than a year after the Japanese debut. The episode’s English title and localized dialogue also differ from the original Japanese presentation.
