When was the engrossed Declaration of Independence signed primarily?

The story behind the answer

The engrossed Declaration of Independence was signed primarily on August 2, 1776.

Congress adopted the Declaration on July 4, but the formal parchment copy was prepared afterward. On July 19, Congress ordered an engrossed version, meaning a carefully written final document suitable for signing. Timothy Matlack is traditionally credited with engrossing the text.

Most delegates signed the parchment on August 2 in the Pennsylvania State House, now Independence Hall. Some delegates who were absent or not yet authorized signed later, so the signing process was not a single perfectly uniform moment.

Paintings and popular ceremonies often make July 4 appear to be the signing date. Historically, July 4 identifies adoption, while August 2 identifies the main signing of the engrossed copy.
