Saturn’s moon Pandora was discovered by Voyager 1 in 1980.
Voyager 1 photographed Pandora during its November 1980 encounter with Saturn. The moon is a small, irregular satellite located near Saturn’s rings, and its discovery added to the growing list of objects revealed by spacecraft observations.
Pandora is one of the shepherd moons associated with Saturn’s narrow F ring. Its gravitational influence helps shape the ring’s structure, alongside the nearby moon Prometheus. The two moons are sometimes described together because both interact with material in and around the F ring.
The moon should not be confused with Saturn’s larger moon Titan or with Pandora, the minor planet and mythological figure. Voyager 1 also discovered or confirmed several other details about Saturn’s system during its 1980 flyby, making the encounter a major milestone in planetary exploration.
