Answer
September 12, 1998
Pokémon Yellow was first released in Japan on September 12, 1998.
Its full Japanese title was Pokémon Yellow: Pikachu’s Version. The game was an enhanced edition of the first-generation Pokémon titles and used the anime as inspiration, especially in its treatment of Pikachu.
Unlike Red, Green, and Blue, the player begins with Pikachu rather than choosing Bulbasaur, Charmander, or Squirtle. Pikachu follows the player outside its Poké Ball, echoing Ash’s companion in the television series.
Pokémon Yellow also added story and character touches associated with the anime, including appearances by Jessie and James. It later reached Europe and North America in 1999, helping connect the original games more closely with the globally popular animated series.
